Thirty Pictures on a Laundry Basket Is an Absurd Way to Run a Shop. I Would Do It Again.

Six things I insisted on, why there are thirty and not three, and why they are going out from £29.95.

My name is Emma. My sister Alison and I have had the shop just off the green in Richmond for eleven years, and we have never sold anything for the house until this year. Clothes, and that was that.

What changed my mind was a conversation I kept having on this side of the counter. A woman would be choosing a cardigan and would say, almost as an aside, that her house was a state. It never was. What she meant was that there were three or four objects in it she was slightly ashamed of, and they were always the same sort of thing: the bin, the airer, the washing basket.

Things that are out every day and that nobody has ever bothered to make nicely, because they are for a job rather than for looking at.

So we had these made, and I went in with six things I would not move on. The first one is the one my buyer thought was madness.

1Thirty pictures, not three.

The sensible way to do this is to pick three safe designs and stock them deep. I wanted thirty, because the whole point of the thing is that you chose it. A woman who keeps hens should be able to have hens on it. Somebody with a shaggy ginger cow on the wall should be able to have the cow. Three designs is a product. Thirty is a choice, and a choice is what turns an object you tolerate into one you like. It is an expensive way to buy and I knew that when I signed it off.

2It has to stand up empty.

Every fabric basket I have ever owned collapsed into a heap within a month, and once it slumps it goes in the shed and you are back to plastic. So the body is quilted with enough structure in it to hold a cylinder with nothing inside. That is more wadding and more stitching than anyone needs to put in a laundry basket, and it is the single thing that decides whether you still have it next year.

3The picture goes the whole way round.

There is no front and no back, so there is no wrong way to put it down and no dull side facing the room. It costs more to print and quilt the full circumference and it is the difference between an object you position carefully and one you can simply put where it goes.

4Handles you can actually carry a full load with.

Stitched canvas, anchored through the body rather than sewn onto the outside, and set far enough apart that a full basket comes down the stairs in one trip. This is where these things usually fail. A handle that pulls away on the third wash turns a nice object into a bin liner.

5Three sizes, and each one for a real place.

A small that fits in the gap beside a bath, a medium that holds one person's week, and a large that swallows a strip-the-beds day. Not small, medium and large as a formality, but three sizes measured against the three places these actually stand.

6It has to survive being used.

Wet towels, overfilling, being dumped on and shoved along a floor with a foot. It wipes clean and it can be washed if it needs more than a wipe. Pretty is easy and pretty is also how most of these are sold. Pretty that earns its keep is the harder half and it is the half people notice in year two.

Nobody should be tidying their own house away from the people they invited into it. That is a strange thing to say about a laundry basket and I am saying it anyway.

Why they are from £29.95

We buy in small quantities and this year the cloth and the shipping both went up on us, and neither went onto the ticket. These came in at £89 and they are going out from £29.95 for the small. More than one and it drops again: 15% on two, 20% on three, 25% on four or more.

I will be plain about the arithmetic, because it is the honest answer to why they are this price. Thirty pictures across three sizes is ninety things to carry for a shop our size, and I knew that when I insisted on thirty. Some of them have moved and a good many have not, and we cannot hold ninety lines into next spring. When a picture is finished it is finished, because we are not reordering thirty ways at this number.

That was my decision and this is the bill for it. I would still rather have made thirty.

Of everything we have had made in eleven years, this is the one nobody expected me to bother with.

What comes back to us is always the same sentence, in some form: somebody asked about it. Nobody has ever asked about a laundry basket before. If there is something on your landing you would rather visitors did not see, this is where I would start.
